It's coming up to over 3 weeks since Madeline "Maddy" McCann has been missing. I hope I don't sound heartless and cold, but am I the only one who is beginning to feel just a bit desensitized to the story with the media going (for me way OTT) all out for this news story?
My heart goes out to the parents, in fact to any parent who has been through such a terrible thing. But, I can't help but be cynical and think back to the death of Diane and the similarities in the outpouring of senitment that Britain seemed to be plunged in. While this is not on the same scale, it appears to me that everytime I switch on the news the first 5-10 mins are taken up by the search and updates on the progress of the investigation.
Is this proportionate to the actual event? Perhaps what I am trying to get at is, would the same level of exposure by the news media outlets be given to a missing child from an ethnic community?

Making up for the lack of posts with 2 in quick succession?
The Maddy McCann thing could be interpreted as overkill in that kids go missing unfortunately remarkably often and such coverage isn't afforded to all of them. I think it's more a thing of the parents successfully keeping her and her image in the media spotlight for as long as possible, keeping people as vigilant as possible.
As for the journalists- I've no idea what they think they're doing. Why kidnap and hold someone who was doing quite a good job of actually getting the Palestinian position into the Western media? Makes you wonder what's really behind it all.
