The death of democracy

The people voted. Their voice was heard and their chosen representatives duly sworn in to serve them. Yet, something was amiss. The powers that be, the "champions of democracy", USA, UK and Europe. The civilised nations threw their hands in the air, because the people voted for the party that did not have their vested interests.

What we have unfolding in the occupied territories is a coup de eta. The Fatah party sponsored by the US and others, has brushed aside the government as chosen by the people of Palestine. It didn't involve any direct intervention (there were no US tanks, helicopters or armed personal carriers), all it required was the slow strangulation of the aid that the Palestinians received. A gentle nudge and a wink, and whatever unity the Palestinians had, all came tumbling down like a deck of cards.

I have a horrible feeling that if the two main Palestinian parties (Hamas and Fatah) don't realise that they are being played against each other, we will see two separate Palestines. The phrase "lions being led by asses" comes to mind.

The Palestinians deserve better, they need to wake up and realise that cutting each others throats, spilling their blood doesn't bring them any closer to their goal of a united Palestine. Right now more than ever they need the support of the world, but how is the rest of the world supposed to help them when they can't help themselves kill each other.

As a Muslim, nothing hurts me more than seeing fellow Muslims being led astray, be suspicious of one another and being divided by external forces. Call me an idealist, but surely when your homeland is being occupied the last thing you can worry about is petty infighting, and listening to false promises from the outside.

At times like this I find it hard to even care about what is happening.
