Migrants=free labour

Note this rant is on migrants and not on asylum seekers, which is a completely different kettle of fish.

I came across an article, which centred on Gordon Brown (the man most likely to succeed from Tony Blair). The article centred on Mr Brown's views that migrants coming to live in the UK must complete a term of community service. His argument is, that by having migrants clean up graffiti, dispose of burnt out cars and other jobs that the government is not willing to pay for. The migrants will better understand what it is to live in Britain.

Unfortunately I'm can't be anything but cynical. I completely understand and agree with having people who want to move to the UK, undergo citizen tests and having core language skills. It is only right that if you intend to live in a country, that you learn the laws, the culture and at the very least be able to converse. However this suggestion (and only the good lord knows whether it will be that or more), is in my mind unfair.

I don't understand why doing community service (admittedly the scope of work is not just restricted to cleaning dilapidated, run down estates) would making intending migrants bond with their prospective member citizens? If anything, wold this not lead to accusations of the government creating divisions based on "real" citizens and the pseudo citizens who have complete set terms for community service? I can foresee a new class system developing with people who have had to do community service and those who have not. Why on earth should the migrants have to prove themselves, more so than people who already live here?

This is one idea that should be relegated to the confines of room 101. Most migrants, bring with them skills (entrepreneurial and otherwise) which their new country of abode lacks.
