Transfer window closes, Tevez and Mascherano.. and the Hammers

Blimey, so finally the summer transfer window closes. Who would've thought that come 12.01 Thurs 31st Aug 2006, Carlitos Tevez aka "“Apache"” and Javier Mascherano would swap the samba beat to blow bubbles for West Ham United.

Initially as a United fan I felt sick, how on earth had a middling club managed to pull off what seemed like the transfer coup of the decade? It was not a pretty sight going to my regular United fan forums to read what fellow fans had written (some of amounted to hysterical wailing).

Anyway, once the dust had settled and I had gathered my thoughts (ie I regained my senses!). It didn'’t appear so bad. I'’m not saying I wouldn't have wanted either of the Argentineans playing for United, instead I'm satisfied that United decided that they would not be cajoled and rushed into buying for the sake of buying.

In previous years some of the buys United made, were to be frank... SHIT (Djemba x2 anyone?). I think (quite unlike a lot of other fans) United had the money to pursue players that they thought would improve the team. With Carrick and Kuszczak on board, United identified Hargreaves as the next target. Had that transfer come off, I would have said that we would be a lot closer to challenging for the title. As it is (and I don'’t blame Bayern for their stance, be it out of spite or a real desire to keep the player), United have a good chance -– not a great chance.

With regards to the Argentineans, I reckon Fergie realised that the baggage (do a Google on it!) that quite clearly came with them was NOT worth it. Have the Hammers sold their soul? I really don't care and I don't know. What I do know is that this season is going to be very very interesting,

PS
England beat Andorra 5-0. It was a good win, but nothing more. We should'’ve scored more, but it wasn'’t to be. Unlike others (who shall remain nameless), I think Macedonia will prove to be a sterner test. I still expect us to win by 2 goals (there I'’ve jinxed the team!!!).

Hammers selling their soul?? I wouldn't go that far by any stretch of the imagination. It's just that teams like the Hammers do not have as much bargaining power as the big clubs such as Man Utd. So they effectively had to accept the signings on the basis of pretty strict terms, one of which is to play them if they are fully fit. If true is this such a big deal? Why wouldn't West Ham want to play a fully fit Teves and Mascherano?? Also, despite the supposedly strict terms one must remember they are paying just half of the players' wages for the time that they are with West Ham. We shall have to see whether the signings have any tangible impact on West Ham's success (or lack of it) this season. As a football fan I would like to enjoy whatever they have to offer for West Ham however long it lasts.
